Don't know Helsinki well enough to tell the BEST restaurants, so I'll just stick to the beer question.
You'll have to try at least Karhu (Bear in English), which is a product of my hometown, Pori. It's one of the strongest in taste we have in Finland, if you don't count those of 5,0% or more proof. Karhu is one of the most popular ones as well.
My own suggestion would be Legenda, which is quite not the typical Finnish lager. The bottle says it's Dortmunder-type lager, but it's actually as close to stronger English ales.
All other lagers you usually get in a pub, are not so distinctive as those too. That means Karjala, Koff, Lapin Kulta etc.. IMO, they all taste similar, and are drinkable only if nothing else is around.
It's really weird that Budweiser, Molson, Miller etc. are the most well known American beers in Europe, since you've got some very good stuff there too. Eg. Anchor Steam and Anchor Brewery's another product, Liberty Ale. The latter actually makes it in my Top 10 beer list.

In my opinion Lapin Kulta is best finnish beer. Does some foreigner brewery owns it or Hartwall? I don't like Karjala, but it is cheap. At last week Tampereen Säästötex (a cheap finnish market) sold Lapin Kulta 12-pack at price of 7,95 euros with collateral. I bought two of them.
I hope you understand my english skills. I'm ninth grader.

If you want to keep your budget low and still enjoy good food, I think you should try these restaraunt-corporations:
Chico's

Rosso

I have personally eated in all of them many times and tell you that all of them are damn good! You can eat traditional finnish food in them and foreign food aswell (italian,mexican...you know )
EDIT:
And best finnish beer is Karjala, there's no doubt about it

If you like dark beers, then Sinebrychoff´s Porter is damn good choice. My english is not the best possible, so let this do the talking: http://www.alcoholreviews.com/BEERS/sinebrychoff.html

Koff and Sinebrychoff are the same company.

My generation sucks.
I think it would be best if you taste all those great finnish lagers Seems that everyone has their own favourite attitude. Attitude because if u are in Finland it means a fucking lot. So come to the pub or whatever and say "Okay doodie, i want all of those damn beers and i will fight for those assholes down there who buy my beers!!! " Maybe they think u are a finnish man though.
And remember, whatever lager it it's and it's finnish IT IS FUCKING GREAT!

As you can see the beer is very much a question on taste. So instead of telling you my favorite beer I advise you to taste all the biggest beers in Finland which are Karjala, Koff, Karhu, Olvi, Lapin Kulta etc.
One great but expensive restaurant in Helsinki is Lehtovaara. That one I like very much. Hope you find atleast one good restaurant based on the tips given to you by us.

What's that cheapish small restaurant, Dick Tracy? From the comic character with same name...
Good steaks and quite big portions too, but maybe not really "Finnish" food, though. I've always visited it, when coming to Helsinki.

Finnish beer is heavenly compared to American but I still suggest you trying some Czech beer, for example. The world is full of great beers, and sadly, Finnish is not one of them.

Chech beer is better yes, and German. But I wanted to be polite to our hosts on my first post, insane or not. And I do like Lapin Kulta, I have nice memories of that beer. When I was very young, my family visited Finland for holidays. There were big signs saying "Lapin Kulta" everywhere. My mum suggested that it meant: "Lapish handicraft" But when we arrived at the hotel and took a bath in the sauna, we were served ice cold Lapin Kulta outside... That´s one of the first times I drank beer and it was lovely...Sugar Daddy wrote:"We find your American beer like making love in a canoe.
